Versa Max for sure, if it needs to be 3.5". If you can convince him to go with a 3", then the V3 would be the one I recommend. Either one he will like, but no need for 3.5" shells, thus the V3 can't be beat and a great price for what he will be getting out of it.

If my dad were still alive & he liked my gun that much, I would sell him my gun at a fair price. Then decide what YOU want to replace it with & shoot yourself. I've been shooting Winchester SX models for quite a while, with next to no troubles. I just bought a new SX4.

My Dad wanted a 3.5" auto, so he traded in a few of his old guns in on a used Browning Maxus. It wasn't enough to pay for it so I paid the balance.

    Two thoughts.
Tell your dad to accept gun as a gift. At some point he can pass it on to grandkid, with attached hunting stories.
Or, buy the V3 and forget the 3 1/2 shell silliness.

On a serious note I am an old 870 guy from way back, love em. But the last ten years I've saw so much bad stuff written about Remington's that I gotta ask if I should be concerned?

Just don't buy a newer one. You can get some bang up deals on ones that were made 1970's - 1990's and they are great guns. Get yourself an older wingmaster, get the forcing cone lengthened and get the choke opened up - shoot steel out of it all day long!

Heck, if likes the Mossberg and won't accept yours as a gift why doesn't he just buy his own Mossberg.
