I'v got a Canon Powershot S1 IS and have been more than happy with it. 10X Optical zoom coupled with a 32X Digital zoom and 3.2 Mega-pixels.

I went ahead and also bought a larger memory chip(512 MB) so that I can take a lot of pictures. My suggestion would be to get rechargeable batteries as you'll go through quite a few.

What are you going to use it for? are you going to get it with the standard kit lens? You will want another lens :yes so you should be thinking about that when you buy your camera. The XT is a good camera but only as good as the lens you put in front of it.

I don't think you can get a better digital SLR for less than $1,000. That being said, you need to match it with lens of at least equal quality.
