Pretty much everything is conjecture on someone's part. Now, in regard to legacy issues and societal maturity, it does certainly sound as if from academia. But, review any significant society throughout the ages and assess what happened to it as it matured and aged. At some point, it is always the challenge to disprove academia but until unproven, academia is likely correct based upon previous assessment. I don't think it's a matter of socialist implementation but instead social reality. How reality is dealt with is always the question.

That's about the conundrum of how to steer society. That all are not sheep is just as inconvenient as the concern that some are sheep. Too often the approach taken is to give the sheep preference. Only the sheep enjoy that.
Yeah, I guess it wasn't exceptional to get 100K but the remaining useful life (sans major engine or tranny repair) paled in comparison to modern rigs. Now, 100k is often simply a good used buying point.

I'll give you the washer an dryer thing. Modern washers & dryers are crap, mostly due to the energy saving requirements mandated by the govt, I expect.
If I came across that way, I apologize. I was simply indicating what I use and why. Most modern poly calls do a really good job of sounding like a duck. They stay in tune longer and stick less. Or do you disagree that in most cases it isn't the call that is the problem?
And it usually was. But it's a different world and unless and until the SHTF the area that holds the most promise for the future of this country isn't in manufacturing the best widget. It is in imagining and designing new and better ways to replace that widget. When the SHTF though, all bets are off and those currently living in Romania will likely be better prepared than the average American of any age.
Haha. Yep. Anyone who thinks rigs of yesterday had a longer lifespan on average is living in the past. Could you rebuild them more easily? Sure, but that's not an indication of reliability. Modern automobiles are of exceptionally higher quality than they were in the 70's, 80's & earlier. AND, we even have power steering, now!
I would agree on the importance of the management and worker commitment to the quality element of lean operations (should have made that point more clearly in the earlier posts). Whether the driver is ISO-9000, Six sigma, TQM, in whatever combination of programs; each step in the supply chain must be committed to realization of the defined success.
Wouldn't it be nice if our politicians got committed to more performance measurement and less effort on kissing the convenient butts.

76 Chevy half ton. Original engine and trans/auto. Commuted and used daily for 260k with light towing a couple times a year-lots of off road. Lots of the old iron still truckin. 66 Mustang straight six. Don't remember mileage-over 200k. Both vehicles top end motor work. Some wheel bearing repacks and of course typical maintenance/repair. Sold in good condition.
That's just examples from my family, but valid in my mind.

Plastics not the problem. Poly Echos are quite usable. Many are indeed acceptable. I have some rubber stock I use to replace corks and that lasts much longer than cork too on those calls.
Lots of idea people out there. Few doers.

On rigs, I know a lot of guys that have been left roadside with mod full size trucks. Just pointing that out. Lots to go wrong and most is unrepairable roadside.
Some govt branches do performance measurement reporting annually. They rate themselves lol.
Same vehicles in Minnesota would be iron oxide by now. Them 70s vehicles were notorious for rusting out, long before other parts went.
I don't know my neighbor has a 2003 1500 Chevy pick up that I think rust is the only thing holding it together, newer vehicles seem just as bad.
Metal is metal, no matter the year. Salt is gonna do it. When I was at Kwajalein, bike chains would rust out in no time. Literally weeks, if left outside. Aluminum Ford bodies should do better up there, I would assume. My HMMWVs bodies never hadn't problems there, while our bikes melted before our eyes.
