    wait... what???
Finally got around to looking at the rest of the survey numbers. What explains the 667% increase in wood duck count? 2k to 15k! Did they change their method, or did Spec and Burroughs just have a good year?

Hopefully they banded a bunch of them.

My guess is numbers are based on counts and had some big counts of wood ducks this year and when extrapolated 2018 wood duck numbers were big and in prior year maybe wood ducks were undercounted.

    Started counting in new places

Breeding season started late so the places they did counting still had big numbers grouped up

That is a huge increase. Lets hope they are right. Those late rains really helped when it comes to brood survival. This years hatch would have not been counted.

Less flooded areas this spring. Birds were more concentrated. Similarly increased the counts for our mallards even though spring 2017 had more precipitation.

Unscientific analysis is the amount of spring rainout baseball games. 2017 had a few makeup’s. Not so much in 2018. Now, 1995...there were a lot of rainouts. That carry over mallard population led to some healthy 1996-1999 counts!

Most wood ducks around my neck of the woods I’ve ever seen in my life.
