    Im stumped. I swapped a 1999 75hp mercury for a 2001 50hp Mercury. Both outboards.

The 75hp mounted and hooked up perfectly, the only issue was high idle but easy adjustment.

The 50hp mounted, wire harness hooked up np however the cables seem short. Short as in hooking up to the mounts inside the motor. I have plenty of cable to reach the motor with extra.
I labled them on removal and when reattaching them the top cable did not have enough adjustment to connect. The bottom cable would attach but i maxed out the adjustment. I attached them (backwards from when i removed them meaning when i would i move the lever forward the boat reverses and vice versa).

Can i swap them inside the remote and call it good?

Any thoughts on this or did i confuse the hell out of everyone?
