pellet count, head & neck shots, well chosen shots, incoming birds, good shot with a lot of practice, and most importantly...

The incredible power of superior confidence that the #4 WILL work, developed by over 4000 posts here espousing the virtue of #4 steel! ;) This is like a magic item "boost" or "buff" that ONLY YOU (and maybe BillyBob) get, awarded through the ether to you by the Internet Gods, who have witnessed your faithful worship and rewarded you with mystical Clerical Power to achieve a "critical hit" that others have not been gifted with.

If you ever played any D&D or role-playing games, you'll understand what I'm talking about. ;)

Being at an elevation of 4,400 ft and shooting small geese helps.

Remove the sarcasm and this is a fact. Confidence is key.

Shooter confidence has never killed a bird.
Appropriately-sized shot, placed in a vital zone, at sufficient velocity to penetrate is what kills birds.

This isn't a "power of the mind" thing, like bending spoons.....

I mostly shoot Kent Fast Steel, 3 inch 11/8 oz of 2's because I do not like a lot of pellet hits on birds for the table. Good for thirty yards out to Specks at 45+.
    Number 2's kill very well.
Number 2's can be finicky at getting to pattern so time at the pattern board is a must and worth it.

Come on billybob, that wasnt sarcasm, that was quality humor! Seriously, i worked both critical hit and buff in there, somewhere out there is a gamer who is totally gonna get that and give me a golf clap. ;)

Heck I'll come out and say that "internet fighting season" was a totally solid joke that made me laugh.
