Had a really crappy New Years Eve. A few weeks ago while hunting I noticed that my 10 yr old lab Luci had some cloudiness in her right eye. I took her to my vet and he felt it was nothing serious. Two weeks later she started to squint this eye closed all of the time like it was bothering her. Took her back to my vet yesterday and he immediatly sent her to Charlotte to the Carolina Veterinary Specialist clinic. Dr Eichenbaum there confirmed my worst fears, a tumor was growing in the eye. They removed the eye yesterday afternoon. She has been my faithful companion and hunting partner for the last ten years. It will be another 7-10 days before I hear the results of the biopsy to determine if it was malignant or not. In the mean time I will be hoping for the best.

As a side note I would recommend Carolina Vet Specialist and Dr. Eichenbaum in particular to anyone with eye issues on their dogs (he is an opthamalogist). They did a first rate job and Dr. Eichanbaum stayed until 7:00 PM last night to see she was taken care of when he was supposed to leave at noon yesterday. He could have easily put me off to next week.

Anyone have a one eyed dog out there? I know she is out of service for the rest of this year's duck season, but I am wondering about next year.

Here is a pic from the first hunt where I noticed she had cloudiness in that eye.

Luci is a BEAUTIFUL girl. I hope that she will do great with her recovery and that the biopsy will come back with some really good results... You've both got some prayers headed your way.

Keep us posted on how she's doing.

    NC labman,

Monroe duck's dog barley is blind in one eye, talk with him about it. Also, he got the dog from PotHole off TOS, I am sure he will tell you a bit about him too.

Sorry to hear about your dog, hope everything turns out for the best.

Sorry to hear about Luci. That's a tough break for her. Be assured that given a little time to adjust she'll be able to continue being your partner for as long as she can. She might not be able to mark as well, but I have no doubt you'll gladly help her if needed.

Best of luck to both of you.

Shes a nice lookin dog, There was a one eyed dog at the Master National. I think he was handled by Woodie Thurman. This dog had qualified several times and has achieved Master National Hunter satus. That is a feet in itself. The really amazing thing about this is the dog had not been handled on a single mark at any of the test.

    NC Lab Man,
What a great picture of your hunting partner. I'm sure you've had a lot of great hunts with her. A friend of mine had a lab with one eye ( losing his the same way ). He was able to hunt with him for a couple of more years. He just had to help him a little more, but still had a great time with him until he past on.
John p.s. I hope you have that picture framed and on the wall. It's Great !!!!
