I was out with Capt. Cormorant yesterday morning trying to get a few birds. As I was cutting some brush for a blind in the dark, my girl Bella went racing past me, obviously chasing something. She came back a few seconds later with a very alive drake Woodie in her mouth. It had obviously been wing-tipped by someone on an earlier hunt. I took it from her to dispatch it and, sure enough, banded! A Washington State band from 2 1/2 years ago. She's retrieved quite a few banded birds during her tenure, but this was the first that was all hers. She was more than happy to let me have it in exchange for a McDonalds cheeseburger on the way home. :tu:yes

Hoss (in my avatar, now RIP) and I used to hunt solo a couple / few times a season and my tradition after these solo hunts was to buy him a McDonalds hamburger. No mustard, ketchup, onions or pickles. Just burger and bun. Now Hoss was otherwise never given human food, even scraps. So it was truly a treat. I would tear the burger into quarters and as I offered him the first bite he would look at me, as if to say "is this a trick?" When I told him it was ok he would damn near bite my fingers off tearing into that first chunk. Good times with dogs :tu.

    Congratulations Bella and Roger!

I broke the wing on a nice drake wood duck earlier this season, almost lost it in heavy brush, and discovered a band on it after finally tracking it down. Sure makes you wonder about other crippled birds from past hunts.
