Im looking for some pictures of mature blue mounts and mature ross mounts. I shot a few this past weekend that I want to get mounted. None were banded or had a collar that I'm mounting but how does the banding and having the collar work? I thought that if it had a collar that it was double banded every time. Im no expert but just wanted some info on that too. Thanks for any pics and info

If they put a neck collar on them, they always put a band on their leg as well. In the past, there have been banding studies where they put a neck collar on and a band on each leg (one of them was usually plastic), but I haven't heard of any recently. I have seen a goose or 2 with a neck collar and no leg band, but that means something happened to the band. I've also seen it happen where the collar breaks off and only the band remains.

yes brad they are still putting neck collars on, a guy in SD shot one last week with a neck collar. I didnt know so i figured I would ask. We shot a snow that was banded in 2001 and part of the band was about worn off. It was an old bird for sure. 3 of us shot it so we had to draw straws for who got it and i of course lost but have pictures

Not like they used to. They still band on the breeding grounds, but they don't collar up there anymore. I know of some specific projects that still put collars on, but they're wintering ground projects and much smaller scale. Some snows got fitted with white transmitter collars in Arkansas this winter. Several years ago, they put some black collars on in Louisiana.

Was the one killed in SD a new one or one of the very few old ones still out there? Just because it was killed last week doesn't mean it was recently collared. Just curious.

These would then be State-run or private and not Federal I'm guessing.
