I hunt the Aspen Parklands in NW MN. Small aspen groves amongst tall grass prairie and lower swampy areas. They are home to a very diverse popuplation of animals. The Nature Conservancy bought up about 40,l000 acres of it and have been restoring it by filling in ditches and lots of burning to keep the aspen, willows and invasives in check. Growing up there were about 100 times more sharptails than today. This year was the best I have seen in a long time..... but nothing like it used to be.

In the first pic I flushed them in some heavy willows. Doubled on them and one sailed into the aspen.

I grew up hunting them on Montana short grass prairie, alfalfa and wheat stubble.

We have decent numbers, in south central ND but corn makes them hard to hunt anymore. Once corn is off they flush 100s of yards in front of you.

Miss the days of walking pastures and stubble for them. Love eating them and normally pass shoot some during deer season, but it's not the same.

Thanks. Had a few camera pictures of him as the fall unfolded. Would have rather got him with the bow, but after hunting hard for him (and others) over the past week, I decided to get the gun out. He showed up about 1.5 hours into the gun season, so I got to get a few things done around the house this weekend.

I spent the day chasing chum salmon. They are fun to catch, not really the best table fare, but they smoke up great! Usually don't keep them but the wife wanted one for the smoker. This dude is pretty yuck, but he'll smoke up nice. 20171104_182726.jpg

7 for the day. Just kept one.
