Yeah....we still shoot 3 sizes in Canada......
    Large Canada's.....8-15 lbs
    Lessers......4-6 lbs
    Richardsons (Hutchins).......2-3 lbs

When hunting them , we refer to them as Honkers and Lessers.

As others have said, they now consider cacklers to be a separate species. Cacklers scientific name is Branta hutchinsii while canada geese is Branta canadensis. Same genus, different species. Just like snow geese and Ross geese.

The further they have to fly, the smaller they are. Which is crazy to think about. Some years I shoot cacklers the first week of September in Northern MN. Those birds have already migrated from the arctic to northern MN by then.

When I was younger and started goose hunting those little guys were always referred to as hutchies. Seems like every year we get more and more of them.

I had a year in ND where I shot one that was sub 2lbs, fully colored up, actually had a guy hunting with us that took it to mount. That year we shot several just over 2lbs and many between 2-4. It wasn't uncommon to have ducks in the bag that were the same size and even bigger.

I always thought cacklers had the white collar, Richardsons did not, which is how mine were, no collar. But still very dark birds.

Either way, those little guys have got to be the coolest birds I've shot to date, just super tiny canadas, very neat.
