too assist with the decoy rescue; you might want to buy a expandable decoy retrieving pole. they expand from 5 ft to 15 ft. and they hardly weigh anything. better to reach with one of them; than to fill your waders or stop off a bar and go in over your head and have something really bad happen. in regards to the decoy spread for rivers/channels out of 15 decoys, I would put 10 to 12 of them in a group or pod and the others I would run in a line down wind of the spread. I typically run them along the shore four to six ft off the shore. it looks like some geese that have landed short and are swimming up to the group.
