Just curious how many are on the DFW email list. My latest came yesterday with this pearl reminder (among others)...

I guess the good news embedded in the link is that lead is still okay for shooting holes in paper and people. :doh

You forgot- lead pellets are still legal.

That’s evidence enough that the lead ban isn’t about lead at all.

Wait until they figure out the amount of lead used in fishing is way more than was ever used in hunting! Pretty much will put an end to fishing as we know it!

Thats what I always wondered.......... when that shoe would drop......... You all know its coming, 1500 lead balls a day dropping right off the golden gate during salmon season on many days.

A bill to ban lead fishing weights smaller than 50 grams was introduced last year but failed to become law. It will probably get introduced again one of these years and will eventually will become law. Canada and at least 6 states already have lead fishing weight bans and fishing as we know it still goes on.

Now which type fishing is a 50 gram limit intended to limit? That amount of weight equals roughly 1.75 oz. Most freshwater fishing uses weights somewhat less than that. When bureaucrat staff wrote up the proposed law, the ocean fishing lobby must have worked hard for a free pass.

ya but the only thing I guess is good with that is they (weights) are for the most part mudded or sanded over real quick, or encapsulated with sea "stuff" on the bottom.. I would think anyway..

But knowing Julie and her whale lover, tree hugger friends they'll come up with something...

Could you imagine the size of a "lead free" 15 lb down rigger weight.. got to be the size of a beach ball !!!!

It has nothing to do with limiting a particular type of fishing. It has to do with limiting the size of the lead that gets left in the water. Small pieces of lead are way more likely to be swallowed by birds, large pieces, not so much. A bird can't/won't swallow 2# salmon trolling leads or 15# downrigger balls, so they really don't represent much of a hazard to the environment.
