I'm taking a public speaking course and the type of speech that's coming up is persuasive. I thought about doing it on gun control and was wondering if anyone knows of websites that have up-to-date statistics, info, etc. I pulled some things off the net and have the book Guns, Crimes and Freedom by Wayne LaPierre but I would like more reference materials. I want to make sure I'm really prepared on this topic incase I take some heat. I want to make us all (gun owners) look good.

Also, I need to come up with a great attention getter to start off the speech. Everyone has loved my attention getters for my previous ones and I want this one to make a great point and be just as good, since this topic is so important.

    Thanks!

Check out John Lott's book "More Guns, Less Crime" It is a huge statistical study of violent crime and gun control, especially in regards to concealed carry laws. Very interesting information.

Great to see you debating this topic. I hope that you continue to debate it even after your school project is done.

I've done papers on "hunting safety" and proved easily that when anti-hunters say that hunting is dangerous they're flat out lying -- hunting is one of the safest forms of outdoor recreation and I have plenty of stats to prove it.

About a pro-guns speech -- I don't like to touch this topic because its hard to change someone's opinion on this issue -- they either love guns or hate them already. If I were you, I would attack one part of guns, like "Child deaths are down" and not try to be broad and say all guns are ok all the time.

First, be careful with using Wayne LaPierre (NRA) as a source. He is obviously pro-gun, and thus biased. A good opponent would tear you a new one for using it.

You need to find un-biased research, then use them to form your own conclusions (which is more work on your part but carries more weight)

If Wayne says "gun deaths are down 25% according to yada yada government report", then go find that yada yada report yourself. And in your speech do not say "Wayne said" say "yada yada report said".

My papers have always been heavy with government reports:

    http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/guns.htm

    http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2000pres/20000724.html

    http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/firearms.htm

    http://www.pcvp.org/pcvp/firearms/stats5.shtml

*** Most stats out there come from 1998 -- which is why you think they are "out of date" -- I disagree though, because 1998 was the government's last full scale study -- which is why that date keeps popping up. The antis and the pros are both using these 1998 stats, so I would too.

I found these sites quickly, but I'm not sure if the have the best stats to use:

    http://medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/TUTORIAL/GUNS/GUNSTAT.html

http://www.guncite.com/ --> check out gun violence

    http://www.code7cafe.com/ --> Click Firearm Stats

I'd look at the ownership of guns post September 11. Maybe show that there are more people with guns then people think.

If you want to change your topic to "Hunting is Safe" then send me a private message with your email address and I'll be happy to share the truth with you.

Maybe you can argue that children who are taught to hunt will respect guns, and be less likely to use them for violence. I know I just read a report somewhere with proof of this.

    Good Luck,

    -Chris

    Fallsflight,

Jeez, why didn't you pick something easier?

mdhunter is correct, I think. Pick a specific topic and explore that.

For example, "assault weapons", "Saturday Night Specials","cop killer bullets", or some single topic.

If you want to compare countries, find "The Samurai, the Mountie, or the Cowboy" by Dave Kopel. I might have the title screwed up, but it has all three words in it.

For an excellent overview, look for "Point Blank" by Gary Kleck.

Thanks for the replies guys. Very helpful information. Hopefully this speech will go well. Only has to be 6 minutes. Other people have chosen some very wide topics so I guess I'll give it a try.

Something told me to check this thread this morning! You prolly can't access Tangents cause of a cookie issue or something on the machine you are using- (is it a shared?).

Also, your hotmail account is bouncing emails- no doubt the inbox is overloaded and they froze the account. Gates only will give ya 2mb now free storage space, cheap prick.

Let me know when you are back home, we have some catching up to do!

    Moi? Trouble? Wassdat?

My thoughtful wife once asked me why I insisted upon keeping a gun in the house for protection.

I simply told her that I couldn't reconcile myself to the fact that some night the only person in our house with a gun would be the intruder.
