I think one has to take in the culture differences as well. The Japanese take tremendous pride in their work. That's from the low level employee to the upper most. It’s not all that uncommon for CEO’s or business owners who have failed to commit suicide. That culture leads to generally excellent quality from them.

Oh...yeah...the stories are amazing on how they will study their crafts. Japanese devotion to duty above self is even legendary in the Food and Beverage business. Some CEO a while back was reported to have committed traditional suicide over disappointing results.

I had a very beautiful graduate level Japanese mathematics instructor. We would sit for hours talking about her Brittany Spaniel show/trial dogs and her love of bird hunting. It was very...very hard not to fall in love with her. The only thing that stopped it was/is my love for my Wife.

Japanese culture is to reach a decision via consensus.
American culture is to reach a decision via confrontation.

Japanese are very good at copying.
Americans lead the way in creating new stuff.

Come to think of it Americans have a different value system than much of the World. Germany, according to a PhD in Physics from Germany I worked with puts as much value on a machinist and his social status as they do his PhD in Physics.
