I used to hunt a blind on one of the South Hayward Cargill ponds. I put out a spread of over 100 decoys. 15 minutes from my front door to the gate, another couple minutes to the parking area, across a slough on a makeshift 2X6 crossing, then a canoe paddle out into the middle of the pond, slide the canoe into the hide, step up into the blind and ready to shoot. That's about where the story ends. I couldn't bring myself to shoot buffies, goldeneyes and bluebills but that was all that would come in. A spoony was a trophy bird out there. I'm pretty sure I shot less than 10 birds all season out there. Never went back even after the state bought it and opened it up for hunting. The mud will kill you......... never venture into the ponds without a boat.
