Well, when duck season isn't open my favorite upland birds are Pheasant and Ruffed Grouse in that order.

Combo hunting out of Lewiston, Idaho--pheasants-valley quail-huns-chukars--all in the same general area. Always a few doves around but the season closes Sept. 30th so no overlap with pheasants... Have shot 3 different birds in the same day but never 4.

They have got to be wild. I do chase the 'preserve' birds once in awhile, but the wild ones are where it is at.

for me... nothing beats a good day of hunting ruffed grouse in a year when the population swing is towards the high end... with a woodcock or two in the bag.

but I might change my answer if the question was asked after a good day of pheasant hunting, with a hun or a sharptail as a bonus bird.
