One of my ( 2) dogs just can't seem to gain any weight. He's not skinny, just very lean. He stays between 53 & 55 pounds. We feed about 3,000 calories (8 cups) Eukanuba Premium performance chow, plus treats. This is basically double what my other dog eats. What are the risks of feeding high protein diet?

We tried all meat dog food ( EVO), but he didn't seem to want to eat as much, and it really gave him the runs (tried for several months), and that stuff is crazy expensive, too.

My vet isn't too concerned with his weight, but without any fat, I know he is prone to getting cold on later season hunts. What do y'all recommend?

Feed twice a day and add in 1 large Tablespoon of coconut oil per feeding.

I've been doing this for about a week. The coconut oil is weird stuff. It must have a melting point of about 75 degrees. it will be solid in the morning, and liquid in the afternoon when I feed. I haven't noticed much difference in his stools, but may already be seeing a difference in the sheen of his coat.

Feed Victor and your problem will be over.

I'm not inclined to switch foods again. Hopefully, the Coconut oil is working. Which Victor Chow do you feed? I was told that feeding over 30% protein will smoke a dog's kidneys.

I feed Victor Professional (26/18) it is as good or better than any 30/20 that I've ever used. As long as a dog's kidneys are healthy to begin with you can go waaaay above 40% without a problem.

Doc is correct. I have tried them all and have better results with Victor then anything else. Feeding 6 retrievers 38/20 now and only have to give two 8 once cups a day. Stools are hard as a wedding pecker!

    And
And it's good for the entire dog, especially coat and skin.
