Word came out last week that the Fred Funk Landing, the main boat landing for Pool 7 duck hunters on Lake Onalaska is closed effective Sept. 4 for 6-8 weeks for construction of a new landing. Barricades have been placed at the entrance.

This landing is under the jurisdiction of over 5 agencies and groups. Apparently grant funds for the much needed repairs were released sometime in late August and the decision was made, by someone, to get it done a soon as possible. Notification of the public has been dismal. There's a ton of hunters that use that landing throughout the season from this area, the state, and the region throughout the season and I wanted to post this to try to help avoid unpleasant surprises for those that have traditionally used that landing.

If you guys know anyone that is planning on heading over here please let them know about the closure.

Was checked by the local CO Friday while hunting. We had a friendly chat for a half hour or so. He mentioned the closing and said he was not looking forward to all the out of towners showing up with no clue that it's closed @ 2 in the morning. He himself said notification to the public was non existent. Long damn run from Schaefer's.

The run from Shaefer's is too long for most folks. Anyone trying to make that run should realize they will encounter massive amounts of vegetation. Nearly impassable with traditional outboards.

Any help in getting the word out to anyone who may be planning on using the Fred Funk Landing will be appreciated. I have gotten calls from local guys only hearing about it through word of mouth now.

Yeah, lax, it's much needed and will hopefully be nice when it's done. Timing is bad for duck hunters and I want to let them know to avoid those 2 a.m. surprises that GK1 mentioned.

But everyone should find out it's closed while scouting before the season, right??

Be no different than the people showing up for the youth hunt this weekend to find the water level is up 3-5 ft from normal. Some launches still might be unusable.

Arrive at the ramp at 2AM? Man the sun must come up early in WI.
