But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Let's talk about fruit. A couple of facts.
    1. It comes from a mature plant.
    2. It has seeds.
    3. It is either good or bad.

Let's go one at a time.
Love. Volumes are written about love. God is love. The Holy Spirit living in a Christian is the promise from God. He is the power. Now why? As a Christian the world hates you. The power of God is given to love those that hate you. Jesus said so. Without Him, you cant love.

Love is a feeling of deep devotion, concern, and affection. The greatest example of God's love for His children is found in the infinite Atonement of Jesus Christ. Love for God and fellow men is a characteristic of disciples of Jesus Christ.

And you are correct, as a Christian, the world does hate us. Even Christians extend hate toward other Christians. We need less of that, and more of the love of others, as extended from our Savior, Jesus Christ.

    Joy
It took me a while for someone to explain what joy is. It was easier to say what it is not. It's not a feeling or emotion.
The fruit of the Spirit does not hinge on how you feel. Joy comes from God as does the fruit. Joy is contentment regardless of the situation. It leaves us in knowing no matter how things are God has control. Peter and Paul had joy after being beaten. Jesus had joy that these things were hidden from the wise and learned but revealed to little children. Joy comes from God. The Spirit lives in us.

I liked reading somewhere about the difference between happiness and joy. Happiness being a temporary thing. People do many “things” to be happy, like a drunk will get drunk because he thinks that’s what he needs to be “happy”, yet he does so without realizing he could have joy. True joy being eternal and obtainable if we will follow Christ.

I’m not saying everything we do to find happiness is bad, just pointing out the contrast of someone finding happiness versus joy.

    Peace.
What a fruit! This peace comes from God. Remember that.
Imagine yourself in a battlefield. The war has been going as long as you can remember. You had an enemy. His name is God. We were all at one point in time an enemy of God. We fought against Him and his kingdom. By surrendering ourselves to him we had to lay down our lives. We could no longer fight for our will has expired. We died.
For a disciple of Jesus Christ we died with him at the cross. Our life in the flesh is at war with life in the Spirit. This is our peace. Crucify Him they said. We may now have peace with God. The greatest lie the Devil has is to work for peace. Jesus died so we can have peace with God by his blood. The Devil will never have peace with God. It comes from the Holy Spirit.

    Patience
I believe it was Augustine that wrote about
the topic of time in a book. It is really a facinating topic. God is eternal. So is his son and so is the Spirit. Life in the Spirit produces the fruit of patience knowing that eternal life is not just a future event but is all of past, present and future. Being a child of God we can boldly proclaim our Fathers name because he has no limit of time. Patience comes from God.

    Kindness
How do we measure kindness. It's a fruit of the Spirit. This only comes from God. God gives fruit to his children. Born again children. It flows from heaven to Gods saints here on earth. Have you ever met one?
Paul instructed Timothy to be kind. Kindness is the resistance to evil. Evil is transferred from the world. The days are evil and so were we. The temptation to return evil for evil can only be won by holiness. It is the Holy Spirit that lives in a Christian that allows kindness to grow. The next time someone is kind to you ask them if they know Jesus. Torn and beaten, he was kind.

    Goodness
God is good. The fruit of goodness comes from the Spirit. God lives in us. Emanuel.
Good vs bad. The moral dilemma of every athiest. Who decides what is good and what is bad?
Here's an example. Suppose a person is treated bad. Spit on, kicked out of his home or even left for dead. Many would call this bad, but a Christian. Hebrews tells us that many rejoiced for such treatment because they were called worthy of the Name. Only God can make all things work for the good of those called to His purpose. Goodness comes from God. He controls all things. Over time we can see this. Remain faithful, those of you who are suffering for doing good.

    Faithfulness
The Word tells us Jesus is the author and perfector of our faith. To be of faith is to be of Christ. How does the Spirit produce faith in us? By being faithful. As Pepperjack said over time the flower forms fruit.
If someone said they were faithful to their wife it would be a different setting from 5 days or 50 years! Faith catches an oblect. We set out to aquire it. The Spirit sets Christians on the Highway of Holiness. That road begins and ends with Christ. Time spent walking the highway in step with the Spirit bears much fruit. For if it was not so Jesus wouldn't have said it.
The Holy Spirit will always be faithful. Live in the Spirit, the flesh will lead you astray.
