thinking of installing an aftermarket fuel/water separater with a screw on filter on my MB 5500 Black Death. I installed a quality in line filter but thought this might be better, seen a few installed in pix. Was wondering if anyone has installed one and pros, cons, brand, model, etc.

Have ran one since 2004 on all my surface drive motors, and change out the filter every year. Never had a problem with water reaching carbs on any of them. With the new fuel injected motors I would recommend running one to protect the high pressure injector pump and the injectors. Water in fuel will damage them. I use a Yamaha head and Wiss filters.

I have always used one on my mud motor boats. Mine has a replaceable cartridge filter I get at NAPA auto parts. Just replaced the filter the other day. Have never had a problem related to water in gas. Of course, I run non-ethanol gas any time I think it may sit for a while. I sometimes run ethanol gas when I am in the heat of the season and burning through it quickly.

Did you buy the filter/separater housing unit at Napa as well?

Got the head from a Yamaha outboard dealer, and the replacement filters form Orielys auto parts store.
