One of the few things for which I hold T.J. in esteem.

He was one of the first - if not the first - to bring soybeans to the country for cultivation. Now they form a multi-billion crop harvested each year.

As I remember, T.J. was an avid gardener for 2 reasons. First was his horticultural curiosity, but 2nd he routinely entertained large numbers of influential people and his government pay did not cover a 1/10th of his cost. Therefore his garden was needed to supply the produce for state dinners.

Imagine if we still paid politicians the same salary as commoners, and they had to entertain or travel from their own resources??
