As far as business decisions go... this one seems to be a real boomerang. :l

We live in a very diverse America and still changing . General Mills used this display of diversity and is standing thier ground . It proves that some are still clinging to another time in America . The population that is younger and diverse will soon be the majority and that is reality .

Yep, this is not the country of 250 years ago, 100 years ago, or even 10 years ago. The real question is more like what will the future look like. Then... will anything currently recognizable actually survive; and whether the results of any changes will be worthwhile or not? Whatever the legacy is, the change agents will surely own it.

    Good thread.

As one who bends over backwards to not be racist (hey, we're all pink on the inside)... the issue is just tough to personally relate to. I do discriminate against some things; like failure to be accountable and irresponsible behavior (including ****ing away resources). But those items have nothing to do with appearance and everything to do with character and integrity. General Mill's boo boo was more about trying to score social consciousness points rather than sell cereal. They were in over their heads.

What is the boo boo ?They appealed to an American audience which is now very diverse . This is not an nation like was depicted on Leave it Beaver , My Three Sons , the Andy Griffith and the Nelsons this nation is now much more Diverse. what was wrong depicting a mixed child and her family . America has a mixed race population that has grown 32 % since 2000 when records started to be kept. The Gen. Pop had grown only 9 % in comparison . They were marketing to an American audience in 2013 not the 60's in the last century . http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/race/cb12-182.html

The boo boo was to fire up a market segment that General Mills apparently cared about. Otherwise its doubtful the USA Today article would have been written and thus this thread would not exist.

Note: I have no personal issue with recognition of diversity. Diversity is a fact of life. I just see no reason for ranking the subject to the level that it dominates decision making. Hey, the boundaries of diversity are infinite. They include the range of possible attributes and behaviors. Its been fashionable to celebrate some diversities for a long time. When does the diverse groups get mature enough to stand alone? How many props are needed? Will it eventually be okay to celebrate diverse behaviors like thuggery or child molestation? I just see the recognition getting a bit over the top.

Or it could be genius on their behalf. Whites are becoming the minority, then blacks are becoming the majority. Blacks have a very high rate of heart attack and heart disease.

Who better to promote a cereal to than people who could benefit from it most?
