The "Elderly guy" (thanks), was just seeking an equitable division of * 1-partial day * of labor... and.. Much of that
"labor" was spent swinging a shotgun, constantly trying to contemplate the appropriate lead on all the ducks. :)

Our drake mottleds' bills (top)are much the same as a black duck drake's (bottom) - or mallard drake's:

Our mottled hens, however, favor their orange-billed hen mallard cousins rather than the olive and black-billed hens of their black duck kin.

Interesting. People have told me the gulf coast birds are genetically different than our south Florida birds and that’s clearly one example.

    Ours have bright yellow bills.

The later in the season it gets, the brighter the feather bill and leg colors get on all ducks. It’s their peak breeding plumage, and has nothing to do with it being a “northern bird” or a flight duck.

The mallard duck bill changes colors in summer too when they go through their eclipse plumage stage during moly. It’s much darker and more dull.

Love those bright bills, and that’s an exceptional yellow mottled bill.

Here’s a drake from last Sunday shining like new money for his what would have been mates.

To tell the difference between black and mottled. But south Florida mottled ducks are different genetically from gulf coast and one thing we don’t see in south Florida birds is olive in the bill or drakes.

    I enjoy seeing the variations.
