The one I had did not sound very good at all....Granted I'm not the best goose caller.
But I can run them good enough to call geese.
I just never did like the way they ran.....or sounded.
I had to sell the call years ago , wish I still had one..........but I'm not collecting calls like I use too.

Didn't John Taylor win a World Championship using a Hess call?

    BlueDevil,
The Hess call is one of my all time favorite goose calls. Al Dager from De. turned me onto one back in 1992. I heard him blowing one at a contest and said I don't know what he is blowing but I have to have one. Not sure what he was getting for them at the end but when I purchased mine in 1992 it was $180.00 (with a brass band). They were $160.00 without the band. I blew the Hess call from 1992 to 1997. It was a great call in the field or on the stage. I won a lot of contest with that call back in the day. I placed 6th in the World Goose in 1992, 4th in 1996, and 4th in 1997 using it before switching to a Lares in 1998. I still have it in my collection and I traded an older laminated Mike Mclemore duck call for another Hess a few years back.

Hey John thanks for clarifying! Just curious when you were competing with your Hess call were you using the standard Hess guts or were you running it with something else? Good to hear from ya! :)

I was running his standard guts. I had a couple of sets and they were a little inconsistent. I like the original set that came with the call a lot better.

Depends on what type and when they were made. In 2004 there was a article in Bassmaster (six secret baits of the pros) magazine. The handpainted bluegills were listed at $50.00. He made alot of "Big O" type baits, flat sided crankbaits, topwaters and jerkbaits. Charlie also made spinnerbaits, poured his own worms, and made some beautiful knives.
