I think we are most certainly seeing a division between the "progressive left," and the "liberal left."

Historically, Liberals have promoted and encouraged discourse and have been strong advocates for free speech.

Currently the "progressive left," is discouraging free speech, even trying to prevent such, and is not at all interested in discourse. The progressive left seems extremely interested in racial distinction and classification, whereas liberals of yore, were more interested (or professed to be more interested) in a color-blind society.

Even lefty liberals such as Bill Mahr have made the distinction. Self-proclaimed liberal commentators such as Sam Harris and Dave Rubin have ardently dissociated themselves from the "progressive left."

If the defining criteria is wishing to eliminate social preferences and the concept of protected classes, then I might embrace being considered a liberal.

Honestly, the classifications have become increasingly confusing.

In the past, conservatives were generally fiscally conservative, and against or at least hesitant about social government programs (such as welfare).

There was also a strong association with the Christian religion, and often regulations were seemingly pushed that at least in appearances were socially stifling. (i.e. certain books not allowed at school, no condoms at school, no gay marriage, etc.)

In the past, Liberals were the advocates of free-speech and heavily against any political/social regulation… And were generally against any religious advocating in government.

Now, we have this progressive left, which is an advocate for gay rights and Islam (which generally opposed gay rights), and trying ardently to suppress free speech, and seemingly attempting to regulate feelings…

And, the reaction of the right has been to champion free speech and to speak against social regulation….

And the actual traditional Liberal left has no idea what to do, or who to support for what… They still hate Trump, but are also ardently against the suppression of free speech, and many are speaking out against the absurd social regulation being advocated for on the left.

And then we have groups such as BLM which saw tremendous support from the left initially, and which was politically incorrect for the right to criticize… And we are seeing some degree of racial and ethnic prejudice coming from such groups, with more and more open criticism from the right, and some degree of quiet criticism from the left, with the media still heavily supporting and encouraging such groups… White male privilege being one of the themes of such groups and followers of BLM type groups…

And then there is ANTIFA which is showing far more obvious political and racial favoritism. A group which encourages violence towards the right, and is founded in fascism (which they claim to oppose) in which the left media refuses to acknowledge, and is creating increasing political and social strife, and further confusing the political/social structure of this country….

We have minorities being convinced on the left that they have been victimized, and we have whites being blamed and labeled with such terms as “white privilege.” And we have the turmoil in the middle of all of this, with more and more people becoming sympathetic towards, or worse, showing support for extreme groups on the right or left….

If you embrace socialism, you'll end up beholden to its tenets. That's where 'liberals' are now. They've all become leftist, anti-constitutionalists....whether they know or want it. They cuddled the bear, and now the bear is cuddling them.

Retired teacher friend always said he was socially liberal fiscl conservative. We would banter back and forth on that label.

Today he no longer says this. His reason ur no longer applies. The progressives have made it impossible to support their agendas. Now he uses the term moderate who leans conservative.

Lots and lots of die hard Dems are not embracing the left agenda. Fear of supporting anyone giving them power to expand socialistic ideals sickens them.

Here we are a week later and Dianne Feinstein (gasp) is saying it ain't gonna happen. Go figure.

Dianne Feinstein Shocks San Francisco Audience: Trump Will Serve at Least Four Years
    by JOEL B. POLLAK 30 Aug 2017

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) shocked a liberal audience in San Francisco on Tuesday evening by suggesting that President Donald Trump will, in fact, serve his full four-year term, rather than being impeached or removed from office.

The stunned silence came from a packed crowd of 850 at the Herbst Theater, where the Commonwealth Club hosted Feinstein as part of its regular series of lectures from policymakers and public intellectuals.

Feinstein was initially greeted with a standing ovation, SFGate.com reported. “But near the end of the political lovefest, the senator shocked the crowd when she declined to say that Trump should be impeached, and warned the audience that they should expect to deal with the developer-turned politician for all four years of his term.”

The San Jose Mercury News noted that Feinstein was even booed by a few in the audience when she suggested that Trump could improve, and even be a good president: “‘I just hope he has the ability to learn and change — and if he can he can be a good president,’ she said … ‘Oh, come on!’ a few people shouted. ‘No, no!’ screamed others.”

The Chronicle added that Feinstein’s comments were a surprise because liberal Californians have been convinced by their elected representatives that Trump is doomed to disappear, and would never expect him to complete his term. “That sort of talk is never heard in Democratic circles, where California Congress members already are talking about what they see as the need to impeach Trump or remove him from office via the 25th Amendment.”

From some of y'all's responses it doesn't sound like Trump won the election but Hillary lost the election.
