I took a day off today and headed to the marsh to do a little photo shooting and maybe try for a snow goose or two. No luck on the snows today but there was a ton of waterfowl in the area. Most of them stayed clear of me even though I was all covered up in the tall grass. Smart little burgers. Any way I took a lot of shots that really were not very close. One thing I noticed is there is a ton of noise and not sharp at all. Is this normal as your subject gets farther away? I am shooting a 7D with the 100-400. Seems like most of my shots with any distance on them turned out like this.

Here is a link to a photo with no possessing. Over two megs in size

Without being able to read the Exif data, it's hard to give a certain diagnosis, other than it's from a 7D and the 100-400. The 7D is notorious for noise and yes at a greater distance the noise will cause softness. And then the 100-400 is not the best BIF lens either. I adore my 100-400 and it's tack sharp on the still stuff or almost still stuff but I have yet to get a very good BIF shot with it. With one exception and that was the 100-400 paired with my 5D which handles noise better than any Canon body to date. I just got lucky on that one because the 5D is not a BIF body either. I'd say your problem here is both the 7D and the lens in equal amounts. Now that being said, I've seen some outstanding BIF come from the 7D and the big Canon Primes along with folks who use good NR software. Your best BIF will come from the 1.3X sensors such as the Mark III and the Mark IV anyway. Now, through test I have performed shooting the 7D myself, I shoot RAW/medium at 10 mega-pixels and the noise issue is pretty much diminished.

I've found, and I cant explain why, that a bit higher ISO helps with the noise issue as well. I have been shooting M-RAW (10mp) and 320-500 ISO and been getting better results from my 7D than at lower ISO settings.:scratch

I have noticed after looking at more of my photos that even stationary ducks that were at a distance are out of focus and tons of noise. I managed to get a few decent shots of fling birds, but for the most part they are all bad. I notice as I was going through my pics. I took some shots of a canvas back that was aways away but not to far and after going back through the shots of that series that the duck was not in the center of the photo. I was using spot center focus at the time and I put it right on him and took the shots. I did not recompose the shot. The center of the picture is below him in the water. Is this normal, or is it actually focusing lower than what it shows in my camera view finder. Here is the picture I am talking about. Also I noticed this on several other shots as well.

Here is a second photo where the duck is closer and it looks like it did the same thing to it.

All this is the reason I haven't bought a 7D yet. There are so many mixed reviews on that camera.

Looks like it front focused. Have you adjusted your microfocus adjustment? All 3 of my go-to lenses required different settings to get them spot on.

I have done that with this lens. I ended up leaving it where it was as I thought it was the sharpest. I really didn't get good consistent tests when I tried it. I used a book shelf full of books all pulled out even with each other so I could use the writing on the ends of the books to try an get my sharpest image.

I added another image in my post of a closer duck with the same problem

This is the same problem I have had with the 7D using the same lense. I would say I have shot upwards of 5,000 BIF pictures and only 2 were keepers. Even with sitting birds at ISO 800 the noise is so bad as to be useless. I may have gotten a couple of dozen fair pictures of sitting birds out of thousands taken. I have gone back to my 20D shooting the same lense and the pictures are a thousand times better.

Still going through the 800 or so pics I took yesterday and most are terable shots. Even the sitting birds. I wish I new a good photographer in my area who could shoot this thing and see if it is user error or not. My year is up in about a month. I really haven't been happy with this thing since day one. From the shots yesterday, every resting duck I took a shot of that the duck should have been in the middle of the picture was not. Just like the ones I posted above. The center of the shot is always below the duck. Even on some of the closer shots. The close the subject the more in center of the photo it will be.
