I really want to try to hand make a decoy, just no idea where to start. Can anyone recommend a book, video, or tools? I know it will be a long process but I'd like to try it

Grayson Chesser has a pretty good book, Making decoys the century old way I believe is the title. Usually can find it on ebay.

Good advice. Start with some old school bird basic birds.

Maybe even a simpler method than Chesser's is "Decoys Simplified" by Paul Casson. Out of print but shows up from time to time for a few $$.

Of course from these books you can go all the way to video series and then all kinds of internet info. A mentor will shorten your learning curve greatly. I learned through Casson's book before the internet took off and then the internet "greatly advanced" ! what I had taught myself. There are also several material vendors that offer kits and advice as well as several internet carving sites and Facebook sites that you can join and get free advice....most of it good.

An old carver told me when I first started 35 years ago "Young'en you get you a block of wood and carve away everything that don't look like a duck" He helped me trendously, gave me wood and patterns. He was a cruel taskmaster. Many years I still have some of his style.
