Here's a piece finished just yesterday. Always wanted to do a dead-mount carving. This one not only took a while in the planning and carving, but also in finding just the right materials to create the entire tableau surrounding the dead-mount. The panel the carving is mounted on came from an architectural salvage warehouse, and I believe it was once a "pocket" writing surface that could be retracted into an antique writing desk. Boards had those great splits running with the grain, and it turned out to be pecan when I sanded it down before refinishing. The call on the lanyard is also pecan and was turned in my shop. Antique square-cut nails were used to hang the old license plate, call lanyard, & trap, as well as to anchor the leather thong on the foot of the bird.

Wow y'all are very talented and patient as was said before. I ordered a mallard and bluebill (cork gunners) from the Duck Blind in my first attempt carving. I'm sure it will take me several attempts before I'll be willing to post any pictures on here, everyone is out of my league.

Don't be afraid to post them. If you ask for pointers some of the experienced carvers here may have some good pointers to help you out.
