Bass$$. Any luck on hunts with an OTC tag?
Technically both of those recent bucks were OTC, but archery only.
Regarding the general/rifle hunts, Arizona does not offer "OTC" but rather "leftover" tags where the number of applicants did not exceed the number of tags available for a given hunt during the draw process.
I took my first Coues with a rifle @ 370 yards on a leftover tag in October several years ago and a second @ 435 yards the year after. Archery deer success in AZ requires either some luck and/or a pretty steep learning curve. Most of the units in the southern portion of the state have leftover general tags. If you're willing to hike and are good at glassing, stalking and shooting, October leftover tags can be in your pocket every year putting meat in the freezer. The majority of the biggest bucks, exceptions to every rule, are mostly nocturnal but folks here in AZ shoot big deer on the early rifle hunts long before the rut.
I'm only interested in archery hunting really. Thanks so much for the information. I'm quite certain I'm in for one heck of a learning curve. Ha, ha.
YVW. I'll be sincerely interested to hear how it goes, best of luck in AZ.
