    Without genetic testing I do not see how anyone will ever know exactly what is going on...

    Could be a hybrid with an escaped aviary New Zealand Shoveler, could have some blue-wing genetics in him (shoveler/blue-wing hybrids look very similar to the New Zealand shovelers from what I have seen), or as you say, it could be an extant trait, or it could simply be a mutated color variation from a perfectly normal breeding.

    It is sure fun to poke guesses though, and I always enjoy these threads with birds that have unusual coloration.
