Everybody ready for a cold opener?
wasnt bad. 10 greys and 2 wigeons for us. bluebills and bootlips took a beat down
2 limits of grays and robber ducks is a nice morning. I'm longing for some more of that cold now. I scratched on the opener for the first time in many years. Scouted some birds but made a last minute change in plans to hunt a new spot that "looked" good instead. Won't do that again.
Hows the huntin down in dixie? My brother is down in Fairhope and keeps telling me to make the trip down because the bay is loaded. What is a robber duck ? Bluebills?
Hunting here is like most places - some days its on fire some days its slow. Nothing like the number of birds you see in parts of Nebraska, but we have our days. Robber duck is a nickname for wigeon, based on their habit of hanging out with divers and robbing them of vegetation when they come up.
We call baldpates "robbers" cause they look like they are ready to rob a bank with that swoosh across their eyes!
From what I understand wigeon are also robbers because they steal food out of the mouth of diver ducks.
Perhaps, they should be re-named, politicians ?
