Ladies & Gents, I've been watch Nature/Reality shows while on vacation (my hunting buddy is going through chemo) and a lot of people in (big) bear county are lugging shotguns w/slugs. Why aren't they carrying....say a high power rifle (458 Win. Mag., etc.). I'm just curious as on hunting shows no one shoot a grizz or polar bear w/a shotgun slugs.

I'd think it or the personal defense rounds would be deadly on one within 50 yards. Wouldn't be my weapon of choice. I'd prefer a quad-fiddy.

A slug packs quite a punch at close range. Should do the job just fine I'd think.

Deployablity, reliability and common knowledge use by others.

Guide in an elk camp I was in carried a home defense style loaded 2 rounds 00 Buck then slugs. Said the buckshot made more noise as warning shots. Plus shotgun allowed you to stay on target in a charge easier. This is what the guide said when asked about it.

Affordability and availability is probably the reason. An 870 pump is a far cry cheaper than anything chambered in 458. Not to mention $100 a box for ammo. I'm sure 458 isnt exactly sitting on the self at most stores in bear country. I don't see why a hardened dixie slug or a brenneke black magic wouldnt do the job.

I would think affordability along with more rounds available with a more rapid rate of fire.

Same reason you may have a concealed carry weapon and not an armed body guard.

And from that 70s show, “Dumbass”
