so we were out here on the Big Island in April and wanted to see the lava but it was a 9 mile hike each way, a 1/3 of that over the lava field which would have been too much for my 7 y/o. Fast forward and all of a sudden Pele decides she’s waking up and starts one of her most active eruptions in decades. What’s one to do but grab cheap flights, hotel rooms and bring the family out for a once in a lifetime event. The eruption and lava flowing into the ocean were absolutely spectacular. It was a bucket list item that’s now crossed off the list. So stoked to show my girls a once in a lifetime event. Boat and crew were awesome and the spectacle was the best they’ve seen. We could actually see the river of lava flowing into the ocean. According to the crew it’s usually hidden by the steam. The ocean water was hot tub hot and the air felt like a sauna. I’d say we were within 50-100yds of the lava pouring into the ocean. The whole experience is one I will never forget. If you ever thought you wanted to see a live eruption do it now!
