Anyone know what this is about? How does this affect local chapters?

As we began to pick up the pieces of Quail Unlimited 2 ? years ago, and tried to determine exactly what condition QU was in, we quickly realized that this was not going to be easy. As caring and determined members, we stood together and we overcame one obstacle after another, after another. This has been a valiant effort by everyone and we should all be proud. I would personally like to thank every member for your support. Our great staff and our great Board of Directors have stood the test and they have given their very best effort. However, the entire Board of Directors and I have made the difficult decision to cease Quail Unlimited operations and go out of business effective immediately.

I have a saying which is really a philosophy that I have shared with my staff since 1983. "We never have problems. However, we will have opportunities." That is the case once again with our QU. There are a few large challenges that we are about to be faced with. Could we possibly overcome them? We might be able to, but it would require money that we do not have and it would be a huge distraction from our basic purpose - Quail & Youth. I'm left to reflect on how best to accomplish those goals in light of QU's end, which leads me to recommend Quail Forever as the future of quail conservation in America.

I am reminded of a statement that my uncle shared with me many years ago. His statement was, "Your pride can sometimes get you into trouble, and your ego could keep you there." We share in an obligation to our mission of supporting quail and youth. It is time for us to assure ourselves that we stay focused on our mission. It is my firm belief, at this time, that our beloved quail need us to unite our efforts. In the near future you will receive a letter from Quail Forever explaining exciting news and opportunities. We hope you will support them in these efforts. We all know that we are stronger when we work together for a common goal. Our quail and our youth will benefit from your membership in Quail Forever. QF supports its members & chapters in a way that we will all be proud of.

I would be curious as to how funding is provided from Quail Forever as well???

I have been a member of our local chapter of QU for a few years, and we did get or at least raise funding for local habitat projects in our area (public land even)...

Anyone know the story with QU and why it folded?

Rumors have been around. Mostly about financial mismanagement and greed by the upper management.. I would bet the economy has not helped. I wish I had a clear picture myself. Like I said, rumors abound.

It would be top notch if the QU chapters could just go to QF and get something going. In SC, I do not know of a single local chapter of either in the midlands area of SC. I have heard of chapters in the coastal counties and the upstate, but nothing central.

And we used to have birds......

I thought I remembered hearing talk about them shutting down a while ago. Did they file bankruptcy?

    Provided from or provided for?

If it is the latter it is your membership dues to QF, I think $35, that they use to operate.

Everything else raised gets spent (or not) at the local level to support the mission. Ours centered upon local habitat and involving youth inthe outdoors.

To raise money we had a banquet and did field trials and a dove shoot. Youth events were some clays shooting and a youth hunt.

We had a clays tournament or two to grow membership.

QF funding is all provided via local chapter membership and activities... with 100% of the proceeds/profits staying under local chapter control.

Personally, I think there should be some % of National support offered so that there is some level of national coordination, but maybe they finance it another way at the National level, I don't know.

Yes, I used to know more details about the QU 'implosion' than I was supposed to, and probably still remember, and since I still don't know if there are any outstanding legal issues or challenges I'm going to hold my tongue for the most part

Suffice to say that going back a few years ago there was a split Board. The financial dealings that came to light prompted about 1/2 the Board to resign out of protest of some of the decisions being made (from what one Board member told me). Threats of lawsuits from some Board members against others were voiced - and still may or may not be out there, I don't know.

Bill Bowles and Cameron 'whathisname' (COB) sold the headquarters, that had been paid off but now had a fairly large 'hidden' mortgage on it that only a few knew about (with Cam being a signature to it or holding it, I don't recall), took the National organization to Albany where the core group supporting the Celebrity Hunt was based, and tried to run things for the basic benefit of Albany's quail farms, etc. At least that's the opinion of many of us who decided to close our chapters several years back when all of this broke lose.

Bowles at one point threatened lawsuits against several employees who answered questions from the chapters and gave answers that were in disagreement with Bowles' desired 'story'. I haven't heard where those lawsuits stand or talked to the three women involved.

Personally, I put over ten years into our local chapter and was the Banquet/Fundraising Chairman. I was sorry to see all of that take place as it had been a decent organization, except for the games Rocky used to play, along with a few others who we didn't feel deserved their jobs. But we all agreed that as soon as they announced they were moving to Albany, and we saw who was involved, we voted to close our chapter and donate all remaining funds to a local seed store for an account for our local DNR office.

All in all, while always sorry to see a once good organization fold, I shed no tears for Bowles and the rest of them, and wish QF the best.

That's the most detail I have heard Woodie. It goes with the general picture unfortunately. At one time some folks from NWTF could tell me a little but that has been a while.

It is interesting that the move to Albany had other motives. I should have expected to hear that I suppose.
