Your track record of Short Mag hate and the only real gun any self respecting hunter would carry is the .30-06 has been well documented here on the site at least those of us that hunt true BIG game not pen raised rag horns are all saying about the same things and offering a multitude of choices.

Show me the ballastics that show the .300WSM which is ballistically better then the .300 Win Mag is only "Marginally" better then the L-I-B-Almighty .30-06 and I too shall bow down afore your feet.

The .300 Win Mag has marginally better ballistics than the .300 WSM.

The ballistics for both the .300 Win Mag and the .300 WSM are noticeably better when compared straight up and load for load to the .30-06.

Not saying the .30-06 is an obsolete relic, but there ARE better selections out there.

Here are what the numbers look like for the same bullet (180-grain Nosler Accubond) as loaded in the .300 WSM and .30-06 according to Federal's ballistics tables for their own factory loads:

NOTE: I did not list the .300 WM data to prevent becoming redundant. Federal listed the exact same ballistic numbers for the .300 WM as they did for the .300 WSM

    VELOCITY:
    Muzzle 100 yds 200 yds 300 yds 400 yds 500yds
    .30-06 2700 2524 2355 2193 2037 1887
    .300 WSM 2960 2774 2595 2424 2259 2100

    ENERGY:
    Muzzle 100 yds 200 yds 300 yds 400 yds 500 yds
    .30-06 2913 2547 2217 1922 1658 1423
    .300 WSM 3502 3075 2692 2348 2039 1763

WIND DRIFT IN INCHES (10 mph crosswind):
    100 yds 200 yds 300 yds 400 yds 500 yds
    .30-06 0.7 2.7 6.5 11.9 19.0
    .300 WSM 0.6 2.5 5.6 10.4 16.8

TRAJECTORY ON AVERAGE RANGE ZERO (100 yards):
    50 yds 100 200 300
    .30-06 0.1 0 -3.9 14.2
    .300 WSM 0.2 0 -3.0 11.2

TRAJECTORY ON LONG RANGE ZERO (200 YARDS)
    50 yds 100 200 300 400 500
    .30-06 0.9 2.0 0 -8.3 -23.8 -47.4
    .300 WSM 0.5 1.5 0 -6.6 -19.2 -38.7

The ONLY place a .30-06 has any kind of advantage over the .300 WSM on this table is at 50 yards on a short range zero, where it edges the WSM by all of 0.1 of an inch in trajectory. The edges possessed by the .300 WSM in nearly every other measurable category using the same bullet and primers is noticeable at the very least.

I didn't say the 30-06, I said the 30-06 Ackley Improved. Acording to Speer published ballistics the 300WSSM with a 165 gr bullet and Imr 7828 will get 3019fps-3167fps. Acording to Nosler a 165 gr from a 30-06AI will go 2918 or so with H4831. This is around 100-165fps or so difference. That depends how hot you want to load the WSSM.

    Did I hit a nerve?

I challenge you to show me ANY publisher that has put anything into print regarding a 300 WSSM. There is no such thing as a .300 Winchester Super Short Magnum (that is what the WSSM nomeclature means afterall.)

Hitting a nerve? Not at all I love people that try to say about how good these common rifles are and then choose to throw out an Ackley Improved action as the COMMON caliber they are talking about. I dare say that you would be able to find the .300 WSM ammunition at many more places then you could find ANY Ackley Improved ammunition. I have some experience with the Ackley Improved action as I have a 25-06 Ackley Improved and it is enjoyable to shoot but I would rather shoot me .243 WSSM now instead since it shoots so much nicer and ammunition is available at my local sporting goods store where as I just find that I am running out of time to load up as many different rounds as I used to.

Enjoy your chosen medicine just do not try to pass it off as the greatest thing since sliced bread. I have nothing against the W S M cartriges. Reports are that some of them are good solid accurate cartriges. They are what they are. The 300 falls between the 30-06 and the 300 Mag.
If you are looking for stuff to shoot that you can find anywhere I might suggest the 30-30. For now the 300 W S M is not all that UNIVERSAL. If things work out for it in another 96 years you might just get your wish. You can find 30-06 ammo in most any store that carries ammo.
The 30-06 A.I. was never greatly popular as it was neither fish nor fowl. Kind of like the 308 Norma Mag. which I should have sighted as it is closer yet to the 300 W.S.M. It will get you 3232fps with a 165 gr. bullet, look it up. You see it has jet effect too. If one wanted more 30 cal. then most chose the 300 Win.MAG. or the 300 Weatherby.

    Good Luck and Good Hunting!

Shoot a bunch of 22LR and 223Rem at small critters for practice.

Buy a box or two of shells at the start of the hunting season. Use 6 or so to check your zero and remind you what recoil is and shoot the other 14 or so at game.

If you shoot your big game rifle alot, you should probably consider reloading.
The cost savings is real (the biggest cost for rifle ammunition is the brass which you recycle if you reload), and you can improve the performance of your rifle/ammunition combination.

    Just a thought.:)
