Spent a week out in Montana, shed hunting and covered a lot of ground.
One of the things I wanted to see during the trip was a Sage Grouse Lek.
I was hiking up 1 long ravine nearing the top. Thought I heard a boom, boom, boom way off. Stopped to listen, my heart was pounding somewhat from the climb couldn't tell what I thought I was hearing. My plan was to cross this sage flat to the head of the next ravine then down to where the truck was parked on the 2 track. Anyway I came across this small prairie dog town and there they were, the area was alive with male grouse. I stayed back and watched the show through the binos. I counted 36 males and more showing up from everywhere. These two came right out in front of me.
Wish I had a better camera.

    I found sheds too.

Nice find on the sage grouse and sheds. I have seen a few in Southern Alb and they sure are big noisy birds.

Those birds are pretty cool to watch displaying. They are fricking huge too!
We went out hunting south of the CMR last fall and shot 9, they are actually pretty tasty.
That's a nice pile of sheds you got!

Here in Idaho there is a pretty big push to try to get the sage grouse back to the large numbers they used to have...they find the lecs by day and then at night we go out and catch them band them and attach a radio collar...

MattC -- those are sure some nice pics with that bird. Impressive size and color over the eye. Up here they were saying that the West Nile virus was taking the major toll on the population. Do you know if they are over this or is it still a problem?
