It killed my mother in April of this year.

Socialized medicine is great for pregnancy and the flu. It is DEATH for anything that isn't "normal:.

I don't know when he said it, but in 1948 Clement Attlee was British Prime Minister as leader of the Labour Party ie. Socialists.

Further, I would choose NOT to bail out ANY private company with tax money. If companys are not allowed to fail then there really is no success.

As far as prices go in a true capitalist system, for anything, the price will be set by what the market can bear.

I couldn't agree with this statement any more.
Like I stated in an earlier post. My dad is slowly dying with cancer, and has stints to be put in and around the arteries of his heart. They said this over 3-4 months ago...and aren't doing much about it. I think the health care system in NB sucks...and I'm sure it does other places...and may be very good....where there is no shortages.
To many pill pusher in NB...instead of sitting down to listen to you...rush you through like cattle at the slaughter house.....that's if you can get to see a doctor.....most are not taking new patients.
It ticks me off....if there it's anything drastically wrong with you...when you go for a checkup....they never call back, to say everything is fine....see you in 6 months or next year....no!!, they side of that no news is good news....BS.
Sorry....but this and many other subjects borrow under my skin.
I'll tell you.....seeing and living on both sides of the coin...is a real eye opener, and is hard to have a bias opinion, if you haven't truely lived it. I used to say all the samethings as Squeeker...but I don't anymore.
Thank God for the rest of you...that can see well beyond the BS of socialism. It took me many years...because I was brainwashed, into believing it was right and true...HA!!. There are no perfect systems.....but that isn't one of them.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a socialist or a capitalist. I try to see the good and bad in both systems.

Healthcare is a problem in this country, no doubt about it. That is probably why we rank (according to WHO) in at 30th (while the US is 7 behind at 37th). One of the key summary points that WHO makes is:

"Many health ministries focus on the public sector and often disregard the frequently much larger private sector health care."

To become a pure socialist means to ignore the benefits of privatized and vice versa.

I understand you have a jaded view of socialism and ultimately the Welfare State. I get that. Probably not too different that our high native population here in Saskatchewan. It is a revolving door of constant government assistance, etc. and never encourages anyone to do anything more than collect a free cheque.

However, for a program to be socialized, I interpret it to mean that the government provides a service for its people and it is funded by the people (the ones that have the ability to pay for it). Yes, some socialized programs can be monsters (ie. welfare, and according to you, health care), but there are some pretty benign ones too that we don't often think about. Fire, police, postal, etc.?

I am curious to know what bugs you most about a socialized program. Forget which program as that can lead to biases about specific programs. Just talking about the idea of a 'socialized program'...

Is it the idea that it is 'government' run?
Is it the idea that there are givers and then there are takers?
    Etc? Etc?

I'll be up to help build that wall, but please help us build ours. It will have a lot more twists and turns in it!

    God help us all.

Hey you thread jackers,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,start your own thread. This one is about the prospect of an NDP-LIBERAL-BLOC Q takeover of our country. I 've got the new map of our country.

As to the socialized medicine thing, rather than posting subjective and anecdotal ramblings, why not look at a good meta-analysis comparing the US and Canadian systems. Here is the meta-analysis: http://www.openmedicine.ca/article/view/8/1 .

The overall conclusion of the studies is this
    .

Now back to our regular programming.
