I am getting a BLM pup in the Spring and will be training myself. This will be my second lab( the old boy is 13 this week). Sorry if this has been discussed over and over, but I am thinking about purchasing the Smartwork Basics DVD set. Is that enough or do I need to also buy the books?

The Smartwork System Basics Set featuring Evan Graham includes a total of 6 DVDs:

I don't have Smartworks (have seen some You tube videos) but from what I hear it is a very good program. Looks like you are off to a good start. Best of luck with the pup. PS. My brother has property in Rigby ID.

Smartworks is a fantastic program in my opinion. I personally like the book(s), but this is more of a personal thing honestly. If you are a visual learner, the dvds will serve you well...however it is easier to tote and reference a book in the field.

You need both. To me the dvd's are designed to supplement the book, not the other way around. The system worked good for me but I was glad I had both.

I have all of the books and all of the DVDs.
If I were to do it again, I'd get all of the books and all of the DVDs.

Think of it this way. With both sets of materials you have a multimedia course of training. The text will supply details and principles that video would not allow time for. The videos give you a real time look at those principles and drills in action, which makes it all easier to understand. No single medium can match multimedia learning.
