well I couldn't get a duck within range today so I decided to walk a check or 3 to see where I can assume a temporary blind going into the late season. The process is fairly simple since I know the flight pattern and the checks are shoulder height, so it's kind of a no brainer.
In my "quest" I'd heard some rustling underfoot and kicked these two fellas up. Steel 3"4's is tough medicine on the phes, as I don't believe they stood a chance once the bead was raised.

It's been a few years since I'd pulled up on a rooster, but it came back fairly quick, like riding a bike.
I just hope I didn't shoot the only two left in d10!

In the background you can catch a glimpse of a pathetic rice spread.
Decent toe water for geese but crazy slow for ducks.

Way to go on the roosters. The johnson grass wavering in the breeze is a nice touch, as is the classic 1100!

    Brott,
I have sheet water at my blind south of Sutter Refuge and my nephews blind has sheet water out near Richvale. This season has been extremely slow at both blinds. Both blinds have always shot way better than this season. I am not sure it’s your stubble I think it’s lack of weather and birds. As a kid I use to hunt standing stubbble out of Sheridan as they never use to roll it. Killed a lot of ducks over it. It’s just one of those years I guess. I’ve killed more ducks hunting small ponds around Grass Valley than I have in the valley this year.

Cool pic... better save it, the way the population continues to plummet.
