Most people don't think of sea ducks when they think of South Carolina but I managed to scratch out a Red-breasted Merganser and a really nice Black Scooter along with a surprising bonus hen mallard.

    Definitely not a hen mallard.

That's a juvenile drake eider. Definitely a rare treat for the southeast!

    Thanks for looking.

Back in 2012 I started a quest to kill the 32-species slam all in SC. I wanted to do the whole thing solo but ended up killing this one out of a friend's boat since we both had some one cancel on us.

This was #23 out of 32. There's still three species that should be doable in SC; old squaw, black-bellied whistling duck and common goldeneye. After that it'll start taking a lot of luck but it's not the goal but the journey that matters.

For a lot of SC duck hunters killing an eider in SC would just be an accident, but I think even Comey could prove intent with this photo as evidence...I painted the decoy (and a drake) last summer.

As I stated before, you have yourself a hen eider.
