I've been planting sunflowers for several years, but about this time every year, swarms of goldfinches and other seed-eating birds start working on the seed heads. By dove season, there's hardly anything left.

Any of you plant anything else that attracts doves as well as sunflowers?

Other than shooting the little bastages (illegal), I don't know what else to do.

    Wheat, popcorn, millet.

Was invited to a hunt at a popcorn field a few years back, and it held very good dove numbers, even after being shot out for three days prior.

Between the dang deer & those little yellow birds - They ruined a good field. Screw them! Im going wheat. Just burned the field down with Gly-4, poast, & 2.4.D & some stump killer just for good measure. We'll start working in the wheat at different dates in different spots in the field to keep things fresh and legal.

Deer got ours again this year, so it looks like we'll have to do some erosion control with wheat in August. I've heard hemp is the best dove crop ever.

When and what do you fertilize with? Are you spreading and covering or drilling? How about weed control during growth?

I don't know how much you plant, but I surround my sunflowers with a solar-powered electric fence. I just use two strands and they can jump over it easily, but they don't. It works great. I plant about an acre.
