Our archery season is winding down and I was on the fence about heading out again. I was poking around and I heard a gobbler on a piece of property I can hunt. I decided to give it a go and see what happened.

Heard some jakes on the roost and a faint gobble. Couldn't tell where he was but decided to start calling. Before too long the jakes arrived with the gobbler in tow. He strutted to the DSD's and once the jakes cleared him, I took him with a Magnus bullhead.

    18lbs, 9" beard, 7/8" and 1" spurs.

Thanks Derek, I've been fortunate to have some great opportunities and a lot of luck on my side as well this season.

And I didn't miss any, that was an issue a couple of times last season.

    Well done Dan!

Out of curiosity, how do you tell a jake on the roost? I have never been able to tell by the gobbles (especially so late in the season)... Anything in particular you use to tell a jake from a tom while gobbling on the roost?

Hard to explain and others can chime in but it's almost like a deeper, shorter hen yelp. Like they're trying to gobble but haven't figured it out completely.
