The 17 lb goose contest

    I know in the permit zones in OR and WA they weigh and measure every goose killed. Been doing it for some years now. I wonder if that info is available, might give you a documented sample base wider than the refuge if that's what you need.

    Course when you don't find a goose over 14 pounds you could claim geographical isolation...

    With the regards to the NW Permit Zone, the geese aren't weighed. They measure the bill, leg bone, determine sex, adult/juvy, and judge the color. Not many 20 pounders in Oregon.

    They used to weigh them at the check station in St Helens, OR. I ran a lot birds through there and they weighed every one. The biggest goose I ever saw my partner shot last few days of the season, they weighed it 14.25 pounds. The guy at the check station said that it was the second biggest goose of the season they checked with the largest was 14.5 pounds, there were also two others at 14 pounds even. He said that thier station had checked more than 3200 birds that year.
