I am still wondering if the hybrid is really just a common pochard. Canvasback x redhead crosses are very rare.
What was the origin of the bird?
Was the bill painted to match the original color?
we understand that a redhead and a canvasback cross are very rare in the wild!!
this cross came from our aviary and my breeder and I never raised a common pochored in our lives! this cross is one of four from a hen canvasback and drake redhead . here is are my live photos of the crosses . and yes I painted the bill to match the original color.
Any more Aviary pics? You guys get any more crazy crosses. The mount is flat out awesome, just can't put something in my house that a family member did not kill. Cost of mount too has a bit to do with it.
Is there any reason for cans to have yellow eyes unless they are a cross?? Or is that more common?
Cans eyes are not pure red all year long.
Personally i think not all cans ever get true red eyes. I think its a gene or age...one or the other. Leaning more to age from the six i have actually seen.
I don't have a definitive answer to the eye color question, but I rarely see Cans with red eyes here in Florida. Only had 37 in the boat this past season, not all shot by me of course, and seen the most birds with red eyes ever, which was about six. A few years ago when the limit was two per day I had 112 come through the boat that season and only saw a couple that had red eyes out of all of those. I see more abnormalities in the bird's bills than I see birds with red eyes. They all seem more of an orange color than yellow though.
