So is it the lower the F # the better? Let's say you had the choice between a 400mm 2.8 and a 400mm 5.6. Which one would you take if they cost the same? This may be a goofy question with no basis in reality but I'm trying to figure the F ing thiing out....(pun intended)

    A 400 2.8 runs $8000.00

    a 400 5.6 runs $1300.00

A lower f stop = a faster lens... larger glass... allows in more light for better performance in low light conditions...

Hands down the 400mm f/2.8 , but good luck trying to handheld that one! :nutz It is going to depend on the use of the lens. I've shot both , and the 400mm f/5.6 is one of the best pieces of glass for BIF you would want IMO, WHEN mated with a 1D series body.

I'm looking at the new 400 f2.8! It weighs about the same as the old 500 f4!
Price: Try $10,500.00........I also want to shoot the new 500 f4 before I totally decide. However I like the closer focus of the 400 2.8. I also like the Bokeh at f 3.5 too. Plus I like the ability of being able to sjoot the 2X on that lens with a 1.3 or 1.6 X sensor too.

Another option would be to keep saving...and saving...and saving until the new 200-400 F4 with the built in 1.4TC comes out.
