Wow that’s cheap for retail. Prolly has completely to do with how touristy the area is. I pay $5 a lb right off the boat.

I pay $5 as well with heads on (when my guy is fishing). You can definitely pay way too much if you don't know where to go. Like you mentioned, all the places in the touristy areas will be asking $12-15 range.

I agree $16/lb is ridiculous. Orange Beach, AL is about as touristy as it gets , but large tails are usually about $12-14 a lb retail.

Not to doubt anyone's shrimp buying acumen, but shrimp size is determined by the count (# of shrimp per pound on average), not a size label. One store's "jumbo" is another's "extra large"; and one's "large" is another's "extra large", etc. etc.
Bottom line though, is that if you are happy with what you're getting, it's all good.

True, I consider 15-20 count to be jumbo..that's as big as I want them.

Correct, anyone who knows anything about shrimp knows this... however at many retail seafood outlets, you will see them simply labeled as “medium, large, jumbo”... I suppose this is to make it easier for tourists to understand, cuz those are the joints charging $16/lb for skrimp
