    I missed the part about the shot --- my bad.

    To me, "no bird" is not redundant. Just like you on Honor, it means just as you have said, "......"No, that bird is NOT going to be retrieved by you") It lets the dog know that the bird is not going to be retrieved and something else is on the agenda.
    If the dog has been commanded to SIT (by flush, shot, voice or whistle) the dog has not been told that the bird is not to be retrieved unless you convey that to the dog.
