Wondering if I am too late to clean out and freshen our wood duck nesting boxes. I didn't know if all the warm weather we had may have resulted in earlier nesting? Normally, when would be the optimal time to set them up?

    I would appreciate any advice.

I'd say if you can tell a hen isn't using them, go ahead and clean them. They'd be ready for a late nester or a hen renesting.

I used to maintain a couple hundred in VA. I always got them ready in early February. The earliest nester I found was a hen sitting on a clutch of 12 on February 9th, but that was an exception.

Thanks, Allan. Ours have a plexiglass window on the side so it should be easy enough to see if they are in use.

Yep, Allan is right. Early birds may be nesting now, but I've seen birds sitting on the nest as far as late June. We checked our boxes in Worcester County 2-3 weeks ago. Only had Hoodie's active on nests, but did have 2 nests where WD's had started laying fresh eggs.
