If you need one by law, I do not see why you would not have one!

I always have mine, but I wouldnt bother if I was 15 miles away and was just fishing for sunfish on the dock. I always go the day it expires and get the combo small game/fishing license

Always for my state, but when we go to the beach in another state I do not get an out of state license to take the kids surf fishing.

You still have to have one to fish those private ponds, Even if you build a pond, stock it yourself you still have to have a liscense to catch 'em. You can drain it and scoop 'em up but not on a pole. Sounds stupid to me.

I always have a fishing license but if I was at a place, out of state, and people were fishing off the bank, then I would probably join in without worrying about finding a place to buy a one day or three day or whatever type of license the state I was in offered.

Now, if I knew I was going to be fishing then I would have bought a license.
